Today’s issues: Terrible Teheran, Kahlon’s failure, Hamas’s ‘wait and see’ strategy in Gaza ceasefire talks, and: an opportunity for cooperation.
The Jerusalem Post discusses the US’s restored and strengthened sanctions against Iran, but cautions: “The return of beefed up sanctions is no guarantee that the Iranian threat is going to be eradicated from the world arena.” The editor states: “A defiant Tehran has pledged to buck the new obstacles and continue its global trade,” and adds: “Although the new penalties in effect could have a major impact on Iran’s ability to export its nefarious goals via Hezbollah and its proxies in Syria, a regime with its back to the wall is a dangerous regime.”

Haaretz comments on Israel’s excess deficit resulting from Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon’s policy of raising spending, cutting taxes and massive distribution of financial gifts to almost anyone who asked, all this with the approval of Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and asserts: “The conclusion is that Kahlon is unfit to be finance minister, and that Netanyahu is derelict in his duty as prime minister when he permits this economic irresponsibility. The victims, in the end, will be Israel’s citizens.”

Yediot Aharonot comments on Hamas’s new strategy for managing its March of Return campaign, the tahfif, which is a sort of ‘wait and see’ strategy, in effect a decision to curb the violent demonstrations on the Gaza border “until it becomes clear what the terror organization can get from Israel and the Palestinian Authority in exchange for maintaining the relative calm,” and opines: “With Israel on the verge of calling early elections, Hamas knows it can get whatever it wants, including a seaport. Meanwhile, everything Israel does on the border lacks real direction, while the government makes populistic decisions, which might cause a flare-up in the West Bank and Gaza.”

Israel Hayom discusses the results of the midterm election in the US, and states: “The Democrats will not succeed in ousting President Trump, despite taking the House of Representatives. To prevent a political and cultural war, the Republicans and Democrats must find common ground.”
