Iran Steps Up Its Uranium Enrichment

On January 1st, Iran began the process of producing 20 percent enriched uranium at its Fordow underground nuclear plant. This is a breach of the Teheran 2015 nuclear pact, which only allows uranium to be enriched up to 3.67%. According to Prime Minister Netanyahu, this action makes it clear that Iran intends to develop nuclear weapons.

Iran has violated the 2015 nuclear deal more than once already. 2019 saw Iran first breach the pact when they began enriching uranium up to 4.5% and collecting a stockpile of enriched uranium larger than the deal allowed. The initial violations were Iran’s response to the United States leaving the Teheran pact and imposing new sanctions on Tehran.

Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports that Iran has enough enriched uranium to produce at least two nuclear weapons. Iran is now closer to developing a nuclear weapon within six months. The Israeli government has taken note of Iran’s preparations and will do everything in its power to keep the people of Israel safe.
