Four papers discuss the Palestinian unity agreement:

Yediot Aharonot laments that „Khaled Mashal opened by saying that, for the sake of reconciliation, they are willing to do everything.  For 30 seconds I was emotional, but then he added that the only enemy is Israel, and I understood that his intentions of reconciliation were for reconciliation with Fatah.”

Ma’ariv says that „Instead of trying to torpedo the whole story, Israel should have taken a completely different tack.  The Palestinians want to unite?  That’s their right.  We have no intention of interfering in the configuration of their government, just as we are unwilling for them to intervene in ours.  All that the new government needs to do is to continue the traditional line since Oslo, to recognize agreements, recognize Israel, and distance itself from terror.  We will speak with any such government.  Thus it would have been possible to pass the burden of proof to the other side and to let Abu Mazen sweat it out with his new partner.”

Yisrael Hayom contends that „For its opposition to Hamas’s presence, it [Europe] is liable to make demands on Netanyahu, and he knows what he has to be concerned about.  For example, a European demand to announce another unconditional construction freeze until September.”

Haaretz declares that the “Palestinian unity is an opportunity, not a threat,” and states that “It would be correct for Israel to recognize the Palestinian unity government in order to conduct a dialogue and neighborly relations with the Palestinian state in the future.”

The Jerusalem Post mourns the passing of former Supreme Court president Moshe Landau, and states that “We can only wish that his successors would be as impartial, prudent and principled as Moshe Landau was. It isn’t for nothing that he was described as the ‘last of the great.’”
