SUMMARY OF EDITORIALS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS
Yediot Ahronot calls on the Government to proceed immediately with the reinforcement of structures in Sderot and the area around the Gaza Strip. The editors aver that, „The reinforcement will also improve the security of residents of Sderot and the area around the Gaza Strip if – when? – we go into Gaza because it will provide the IDF and the Government with greater freedom of action.”
Ma’ariv says that Israel has been extraordinarily lucky that a Kassam rocket has not hit – for example – a kindergarten in Sderot and caused numerous fatalities, and claims that, „Luck is what is still allowing the State of Israel to wait, to be patient and to not use major force.” The editors assert that, „the main Israeli dilemma,” is whether to continue small-scale military operations against Hamas or embark on large-scale military action, similar to 2002’s „Defensive Shield” operation in Judea and Samaria. However, the paper declares that, „Two events will put an end to the Israeli dilemma and junk all considerations of restraint: One, when the luck runs out. The second, when more accurate, longer-range Kassams, with stronger warheads, will start to fall on Ashkelon and Kiryat Gat. It is uncertain which will come first.”
