The World Jewish Congress is deeply saddened by the passing of Edgar M. Bronfman, WJC president for nearly three decades and one of the great leaders of Diaspora Jewry.
As WJC president from 1979-2007, Edgar was responsible for bringing new member communities from Eastern Europe and other countries under the WJC umbrella. And through his dedicated efforts, he played a pivotal role in molding the World Jewish Congress into the preeminent international organization that it remains today.
Throughout his tenure, Edgar’s tenacity and determined, unrelenting pursuit of justice led to historic achievements for the World Jewish Congress on behalf of the Jewish people around the world — the liberation of Soviet Jewry, the exposure of the Nazi past of Austrian President Kurt Waldheim, the fight for justice and dignity for Holocaust victims and their heirs through restitution and compensation from more than a dozen European countries and settlements from Swiss banks.
Edgar was a lifelong and ardent supporter of the State and people of Israel, whose generosity enabled generations of young Jews to learn about their history, culture and identity. He campaigned energetically against anti-Semitism and all forms of racism, advocating for greater respect, understanding and cooperation between people of different faiths and ethnicities.
His commitment to WJC and world Jewry brought true meaning to the words “All Jews are responsible for one another.”
The World Jewish Congress remains committed to carrying forward the legacy of Edgar Bronfman as we work tirelessly to protect and ensure the safety and security of our global Jewish community. Because even as we mourn his passing, we are inspired by his leadership, vision and passion for justice.
