The Arabic language media has reported that a powerful explosion occurred on a Syrian military base next to the port city of Latakia in the north western part of the country.  According to some reports, the Syrian air force base had missiles fired at it from the sea.

Last night, the Lebanese governmental news agency reported that six Israeli planes infiltrated Lebanese air space, near the capital city of Beirut.  The Syrian Organization for Human Rights reported this morning that the explosion destroyed the Syrian base.

Twitter reports from witnesses stated that the explosion occurred next to the village of Snober Jabla, south of Latakia.   Various media organizations in Syria and Lebanon speculate that Israel is behind the attack on the Syrian air force base.  Israel didn’t respond to these reports.

There was a report of an attack on a Hezbollah rocket shipment last week

The Kuwaiti newspaper Al Jarida reported last week that Israel attacked a shipment of advanced missiles that were intended to be passed on to Hezbollah.  According to the report attributed to senior level Israeli security officials, the attack was implemented on the Israeli-Lebanese border.

It is not clear whether the alleged attack took place in Syrian or Lebanese territory.  The report claims that the rockets were intended to increase Hezbollah’s rocket arsenal.  The IDF refused to speak about this report, which wasn’t confirmed by other sources.

The IDF bombed Syrian rocket arsenals

Last July, foreign media reported that the Israeli Air Force was behind a series of explosions targeting weapon arsenals that included Russian missiles in the city of Latakia in Syria.  American officials confirmed the Israeli attack and explained that the Russian missiles were a threat to Israeli naval vessels.

At the beginning of May, at least two alleged Israeli attacks were implemented within Syrian territory.  One of the attacks was on the Jeremiah Research Facility near the capital city of Damascus, where an Israeli attack was also alleged last January.

According to appraisals, the goal of these attacks was to halt the transfer of Iranian missiles on their way to Hezbollah.  Israel has not officially confirmed the attack, but senior level security officials, including Minister Moshe Ya’alon, explained that “Israel will do whatever is required to prevent weapon transfers from Syria to terrorist organizations.  We stopped them in the past and we will continue to halt this in the future.”
