According to a report from an Egyptian military source, Egyptian F-16 planes flew over the Gaza border between Egypt and Gaza. This is the first time Egyptian military planes have patrolled so close to the border with Israel since the peace agreement was signed in March of 1979.

The Egyptian military source added that Egyptian Apache helicopters were also flying in the area. The source made it clear that the planes and helicopters’ flight was part of increased security actions, aided by ground forces and police and that it was not an unusual activity.

The Egyptian army claims that the goal of the activity is to track and document all of the ground movements of armed organizations in Sinai and in order to keep the security along the border.

The Egyptian army has been acting against the terror cells in Sinai for a long while and it seems that the mission has reached the final straight. Military sources estimate that they have so far managed to destroy 75% of the terror infrastructure in the Peninsula. They report that several terrorist have been killed in the operation, hundreds have been injured and more than a thousand tunnels have been destroyed – a thing that according to them, has brought a complete stop to weapons smuggling into the Gaza strip.
At the same time, the violent conflicts in Egypt continue. Last week the country marked the 40th anniversary of the “October War”, and confrontations erupted: at least 51 people were killed and over 100 were injured in conflicts between thousands of Morsi supporters and security forces. A security source reported to the national news agency that most of the dead, possibly all – were Muslim Brothers supporters who clashed with the security forces. Most of the conflicts were located at the Ramses Square in Cairo and on the route to the famous Tahrir square.
