SUMMARY OF OP-EDS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS

Yediot Ahronot discusses the issue of universal military service in Israel and observes, „There are three option: The first is devoid of ideology and asks only what would bring the most benefit to the country; the second is principled and emphasizes the importance of equality in distribution of the burden (primarily military) among the Jews; the third, also based on principle, the one supported by Liberman, talks about the obligation of some sort of service by all citizens, including Arabs.” The author says that he believes the first option, which emphasizes integration over equality, to be the correct one and contends that, „There never was, and there will never be, equality in bearing the burden.”

Ma’ariv tells that, „The mother was a law-breaker who remained in the country without a permit. For six years she avoided the authorities after her entry permit expired. While this was going on she became pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl. The girl began to learn at one of the schools. The Government decided that an end must be put to the encouragement of law-breaking and that illegal aliens must return to their countries. Familiar story? Of course. It recently occurred in Norway. It happens in many other European counties.” The author notes that, „Human rights activists who are fighting to flood Israel with illegal migrants are openly acting to obliterate the country’s Jewish majority.”

Yisrael Hayom points out that, „Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood are a clear, radical variety of Islam, which views the conflict with Christianity and Judaism as a deep religious conflict. As opposed to the PLO, which saw the conflict as a gap between nationalistic aspirations, the Islamists view the conflict through the religious, and not nationalist, prism. The geo-strategic environment that surrounds Israel alters quickly, before we have the chance to digest changes and contemplate the proper approach… Harsh words must make way for cold judgment which will delineate policy, and in a challenging situation, thought, which leads to a real change in approach, must be demanded.”
