SUMMARY OF OP-EDS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS

Yediot Ahronot exclaims, „Wanted: Leader” and discusses the effect of a leadership void on the current financial crisis. „The stock markets are reacting not to real and reasoned dangers, but rather to fabricated dangers, and especially the helplessness of the political apparatus of the European Union.” The author notes that the declines on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange have been similar to that on European exchanges and adds that, „Considering the worsening geo-political situation, this can be viewed as an achievement.” The author contends that, „An absence of leadership in Israel is more dangerous than an absence of leadership in Europe. The tsunami is not yet spent.”

Ma’ariv believes that, „The lesson of September 11 is that the democracies are considerably stronger than their enemies. The death of Bin Laden and the disintegration of Al Qaeda prove this.”

Yisrael Hayom professes that, „Erdogan and Netanyahu are sitting on a high tree. It is a zero-sum game. The current dispute is insoluble and can only be managed. Erdogan is the one who is determining its pace and course – and it is in this context that we must examine his trip to Egypt. He is prepared to intensify the dispute and views it as a test of personal and national strength. Israel must not play into his hands because it appears that he has no restraints. The US must urgently mediate and find a formula to assuage Erdogan’s trampled honor and Netanyahu’s just path.”
