SUMMARY OF OP-EDS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS
Yediot Ahronot says that Rabbi Eliezer Melamed and the yeshiva that he heads, Har Bracha, represent a more ultra-orthodox leaning stream of religious Zionism that has split the religious Zionist public and deviated from one of the original goals of the hesder yeshivaen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hesder > network – „to be a two-way human bridge between the secular and religious-Zionist societies, a bridge based on sharing the burden, which is neither condescending, nor arrogant nor vindictive.”
Ma’ariv discusses the settlers’ reto, „the building freeze in the territories,” and suggests that, „If the Yesha leaders understand that biting their lower lip and showing restraint are a strategy that serves them and – mainly – the State of Israel, they will also win improved room in which to maneuver.” The author believes that, „Sometimes a country has to take a step backwards and whoever hinders this, harms it,” and adds that, „Let there be no mistake – most of the Israeli public thinks that it is taking a step forward and perhaps this is what so enrages the people in Yesha; if so, mores the pity.”
Yisrael Hayom declares that, „The Defense Minister is right,” to revoke the Har Bracha yeshiva’s hesder status and adds that, „It is absolutely forbidden that the IDF become an arena for political clashes and a tool for the threats of a minority, as high quality as it may be.”
Walla! reminds its readers that, „By their willingness to serve as an address for soldier-students enquires on questions of a political nature and due to the political nature of the discussions taking place at the yeshivas…the hesder yeshivas have become privy to bargaining with the army command over the political nature of military missions.” The author asserts that Defense Minister Ehud Barak’s decision to revoke the hesder status of Rabbi Melamed’s Har Bracha yeshiva is an attempt to, „change the conditions of hesder and weaken the rabbis’ political bargaining power. He is, in effect, seeking to limit the rabbis’ authority to politically influence soldiers. To this, the hesder rabbis cannot agree.” The author believes that, „The current move will not have any far-reaching consequences. It is possible that Rabbi Melamed will be the hero of the hour due to the crisis. In the intermediate term, the hesder rabbis will limit themselves so as not to pull on the leash. In the long term, the political nature of the hesder network will be preserved.”
