FM Livni visits the IDF Judea and Samaria Division

Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs

Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipi Livni, head of the Israeli negotiating team for the talks with the Palestinians, visited the IDF Judea and Samaria Division today. FM Livni was briefed by the commander of the Central Command, head of the civil administration, commander of the Judea and Samaria Division and the commander of the Shomron Brigade regarding the current terror situation, deployment of the Palestinian mechanisms, military and civilian coordination activities, and enforcement and supervision of building activities in Judea and Samaria. The military commanders also detailed the military activities carried out within the last few days in the city of Nablus, and their subsequent success in preventing terror.
FM Livni told the Israeli commanders that Israel would continue to act against terrorism to ensure the safety of Israeli civilians – including during the negotiation process with the Palestinians. „Israel has no intention of throwing the key to the other side at the end of the process and hoping for the best. That is why we must work together right now to change the situation on the ground, to continue the war on terror, to build institutions and effective security authorities on the Palestinian side so that there will be an effective governmental entity with which we can reach agreements. Only in this manner will we be able to implement the agreements we reach during the process”.
In addition, FM Livni stated in regard to the IDF’s military operations in Judea and Samaria, that „as Foreign Minister, I have stated in the past that Israel must fight for its security wherever it is necessary – even if it is at the cost of international criticism. On the other hand, the security system is aware that wherever it is possible to alleviate Palestinian civilian economic activities without endangering security – it should do so, because this serves the Israeli interest”.
