Yediot Ahronot discusses last Friday’s murder of two off-duty soldiers,
who were hiking in Wadi Telem, west of Hebron, by Palestinian
terrorists: „As to why they didn’t coordinate the hike with the IDF,
residents of Kiryat Arba were quoted as saying that nobody would approve
the hike and that, therefore, there was no reason to coordinate it.
This is irresponsible. „They knew no fear,’ their friends praised them
but this is not necessarily a compliment. Even the most daring fighter
and the most experienced hiker must have a little fear and a large
degree of responsibility.”
Ma’ariv notes that the public and the political establishment are
waiting to see if Labor Party Chairman Defense Minister Ehud Barak will
live up to his promise to withdraw from the Government if the Winograd
Committee final report is sufficiently damning and Prime Minister Ehud
Olmert does not resign in its wake. The editors assert that, „Ehud
Barak has the public’s permission not to quit despite his promise,” and
add that, „This is because the public, which repeatedly re-elects
politicians who break their promises, is a partner in formulating the
norm.”
