Israeli killed in suicide bombing at West Bank checkpoint

An Israeli was killed Thursday morning when at least one suicide bomber detonated his explosives at an Israel Defense Forces checkpoint near the northern West Bank town of Tul Karm, killing one Israeli and seriously wounding another, witnesses said. Two other Israelis and six Palestinians were wounded in the blast. One of the two Israelis was seriously wounded and airlifted to Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, near Tel Aviv. The other Israeli was taken to Hillel Yaffe Medical Center in Hadera, Israel Radio reported. It is unclear whether there were two suicide bombers – the man who blew himself up and a woman beside him – but the reports could not be immediately confirmed. Israel Radio reported that the IDF had received an early warning of the attack and had placed several impromptu checkpoints across the West Bank, including the one at which the attack took place. Military officials said the bombers were on their way to carry out a suicide bombing inside Israeli territory, but decided to blow up at the checkpoint when they realized they wouldn’t be able to reach Israel. „I was standing by the checkpoint south of Tul Karm when I heard an explosion and there was another explosion near an Israeli jeep at the checkpoint,” said a Palestinian witness, who himself was hit by shrapnel. The last suicide bombing was on December 6, when an attack at a shopping mall in the coastal city of Netanya killed five Israelis and wounded dozens more.
