Only now, after 10 months of imprisonment, did the state decide that the three youths were not responsible for the abduction and murder of Oleg Shaichat. The difficult question: How did they make the main suspect confess to a murder he did not commit? ______________________________ SUMMARY OF EDITORIALS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS Yediot Ahronot believes that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon postponed his scheduled trip to the US for talks with US President George Bush, because both sides will profit by the absence of the meeting, and suggests that, It is hard to believe how everything went wrong for Sharon and Bush within a few weeks, from the time when they needed each other to when they mainly need not to be in each others company. The editors assert that, The two of them, who only a few weeks ago were self-confidently basking in the ratings and seemed as those who were about to fashion a new international agenda, suddenly find themselves like lame ducks, with the only assistance they are capable of offering the other at the moment is to avoid a public meeting.
Yediot Ahronot, in its second editorial, ventures that unless Prime Minister Sharons supporters within the Likud can find a way to cooperate with Shinui, Labor and other parties in order to advance the disengagement plan, it is doubtful whether the large public support for the plan will produce anything tangible. Hatzofeh analyzes the situation on the northern border and complains that, Hezbollah is not concerned by the IDFs reactions because it knows that they will be small in any case. The editors believe that, The longer that Israel does not take a risk in eliminating Hezbollah and its arsenal, it leaves a very dangerous front open for directives that will come – sooner rather than later – from Iran or Syria, and call on the IDF, to close accounts with Nasrallah before it is too late.
