Today’s issues: Ginsburg’s message, election-anytime economics, what Assad’s victory means to Israel, when boycott has a Jewish face, and Flug’s stern parting message for Netanyahu.

 

 

The Jerusalem Post  discusses last week’s visit to Israel by US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and notes that “Ginsburg counseled Israel not to do anything to harm the independence of its Supreme Court.”

Haaretz comments on Governor of the Bank of Israel Karnit Flug’s departing message to Prime Minister Netanyahu, and agrees with her opinion that “‘The existence of an independent professional entity is doubly important in a reality in which the government operates under constant uncertainty regarding the date of the next elections, and short-term political constraints.’” The editor points out that “Netanyahu understands the importance of the professionalism and reliability of a central bank and knows that this must not be tampered with,” and adds: “The governor’s letter was meant to remind him of this, lest his current government’s tendency to weaken gatekeepers include the central bank.”

Yediot Aharonot  looks at the capture by loyalist forces of areas in the Daraa province in southern Syria, an important psychological victory for Syrian President Assad and the Russians, and, noting the resulting positive and negative consequences for Israel, declares: “The picture is a complicated one and the war in Syria has still not yet been decided, but the fall of Daraa was the beginning of the end and Israel must prepare for the day after.”

Israel Hayom  discusses the deportation from Israel of Ariel Gold is 43, U.S. citizen and a Jew, because of her outspoken support of the BDS movement, and her subsequent announcement of her intent to return as a new immigrant, and states: “Under the Law of Return, Jews who support the BDS movement cannot be barred from making aliyah. Nor should they be – our democracy is strong enough to include their voices.”

Globes  discusses the parting message from outgoing Governor of the Bank of Israel Karnit Flug to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in which she warns that “unless someone worthy of the task is appointed, and in a proper procedure, the rating agencies and the international economic organizations, which keep a close watch on how the Bank of Israel functions and its professional standards, will hold us to account.”
