Today’s issues: Kurdish statehood, Israel is arming criminals, no comparison between Kurds and Palestinians, an unusual attack with limited solutions, and the media is overlooking overtures by Sunni Arabs.

The Jerusalem Post comments on the almost insurmountable obstacles facing those who wish to establish an independent Kurdish state in northern Iraq is no easy matter, but asserts: “anyone who values democratic values and the right of a people to self-determination and who empathizes with the Kurds’ tragic history cannot help but be moved by Monday’s referendum and hope it will lead one day to international recognition of an independent and viable Kurdish state.”

Haaretz is angered by Israel’s refusal to stop selling arms to the Myanmar military despite the UN stating that Myanmar’s army is carrying out ‘a textbook example of ethnic cleansing’ of the Rohingya Muslim minority, a nd asserts: “Not only the High Court justices, but members of Knesset and the government from the right, the center and the left should come together to put an immediate stop to this disgrace, in which the State of Israel is arming groups that are committing crimes against humanity.”

Yediot Aharonot asserts: “Israel must support the establishment of an independent Kurdistan, both for strategic and moral reasons,” and declares: “Unlike the Kurdish people, the Palestinian people’s national identity is based exclusively on denying Zionism. Political independence for the Palestinians means harming Israel’s security; political independence for the Kurds means a contribution to regional stability.”

Israel Hayom discusses Tuesday’s lone wolf terror attack in Har Adar, in which three people were killed, and notes that while there is no doubt that the Palestinian Authority had nothing to do with the attack or the terrorist, nevertheless “The Palestinian Authority’s support for terrorism via incitement, lack of censure and financial support to terrorists’ families serves as an incentive for many Palestinians to commit acts of terror.”

Globes comments on the warming of relations between Israel and several Sunni states, largely ignored by the media, and declares: “The warming of the Sunni Arabs towards Israel is the really GOOD news, which should not be ignored amidst the pervasive gloom and doom.”
