The genocide of the Roma and Sinti during the Second World War is still largely unknown and untaught. It is estimated that 500 000 European Roma and Sinti were murdered during the Holocaust: they were deported, exploited, murdered in extermination camps, they died of hunger and disease, were executed in their villages. What remains also unknown is the resistance of the Roma. On May 16^th, 1944, the Roma and Sinti prisoners of the socalled “gypsy camp” in Auschwitz resisted against the SS who intended to exterminate them. The “gypsy camp” was liquidated several months later, in the night of the 2^nd to 3^rd of August.

With this event we would like to pay tribute to the Roma and Sinti who were victims of the Holocaust.

A roma népirtás hivatalos elismerése még mindig hiányos, illetve nagyban korlátozott, miközben közel 500 ezer európai roma és sinti esett a holokauszt áldozatául: deportálták és kihasználták őket, megsemmisítő táborokban pusztították el őket vagy az éhség és betegség végzett velük. 1944. május 16-án, az első magyar tömegtranszport érkezése előtt néhány órával a nácik megkísérelték felszámolni a birkenaui cigánytábort. Kellett a hely a magyar zsidóknak. A 6 ezer cigány azonban megsejtette, mi vár rájuk, és az SS nagy meglepetésére ellenállást tanúsított. Botokat, késeket és köveket ragadtak. A „cigány tábort“ pár hónappal később 1944. augusztus 2-án éjjel, 3-án virradóra szabadították fel, egyetlen éjszaka alatt háromezer cigány férfi, nő és gyermek vesztette életét.

Az esemény egyfajta főhajtás a Holokauszt roma áldozatai előtt.
