A Fehér Ház a korábban tervezettnél intenzívebb támadást akar Szíria ellen
A korábban tervezettnél intenzívebb és tovább tartó támadás terveit dolgozza ki Szíria ellen a Pentagon – adta hírül vasárnap a Los Angeles Times című amerikai napilap.
Az újság az Egyesült Államok hadseregének meg nem nevezett két tisztjére hivatkozva arról számolt be, hogy a Fehér Ház az eddig meghatározottaknál több szíriai célpont kijelölését kérte a katonai tervezőktől. A lap szerint a támadás így nem kettő, hanem három napig tartana, és az eddig meghatározott mintegy 50 célpont listáját sokkal többre növelik.
A lap szerint az amerikai rakétatámadás első hullámát azonnal több csapásmérés követné azon célok ellen, amelyeket nem találtak el, illetve nem semmisítettek meg a támadás megindulásakor.
A Pentagon azt is mérlegeli, hogy a légierő gépeit is bevessék-e a támadásban annak az öt – manőverező robotrepülőgépekkel és rakétákkal felfegyverzett – amerikai hadihajónak a támogatására, amelyek a Földközi-tenger keleti felén tartózkodnak a szíriai légvédelem hatókörén kívül.
A lap szerint a Vörös-tengeren tartózkodó amerikai repülőgép-hordozó, csapásmérő hajóegység – egy cirkáló és három romboló – minden tagja képes olyan manőverező robotrepülőgépek indítására, amelyek hatótávolsága eléri Szíriát.
Az amerikai lap emlékeztetett arra, hogy Obama elnök és tanácsadói a katonai tervezés intenzívebbé tételével együtt arra törekszenek, hogy a közvélemény támogatása mellett a kongresszus megszavazza a felhatalmazást egy olyan katonai akció megindítására, amellyel megbüntetnék Bassár el-Aszad elnök rendszerét, amiért állítólag vegyi fegyvert vetett be a civil lakosság ellen a múlt hónapban. Earlier on Saturday, US Secretary of State John Kerry said in a joint press conference with his French counterpart, ‘‘this is not the time to be silent spectators to slaughter’’ adding that ‘‘this is not the time to allow a dictator unfettered use of some of the heinous weapons on earth.’’
„There is wide and growing support,” Laurent Fabius told reporters in Paris. „Right now, seven of the eight countries in the G8 share our opinion on a strong reaction and 12 countries of the G20 also share this opinion.”
Kerry added that many countries were prepared to take part in US-led military strikes against the Syrian regime.
„We have more countries prepared to take military action than we actually could use in the kind of military action being contemplated.”
President Barack Obama also addressed the Syrian crisis in a radio address to the nation arguing that America needs to use limited military force in Syria to deter future chemical weapons attacks, but said he did not want to enter into another costly and protracted war.
„This would not be another Iraq or Afghanistan,” Obama said in his weekly radio and internet address, previewing arguments he will make in a nationally televised address on Tuesday.
„Any action we take would be limited, both in time and scope – designed to deter the Syrian government from gassing its own people again and degrade its ability to do so,” Obama said. . Obama has asked the US Congress to approve the use of force. A final vote in the US Senate is expected at the end of the coming week. A US House vote is likely the week of Sept. 16.
Obama will give interviews on Monday to the three network news anchors, as well as to anchors from PBS, CNN, and Fox, more evidence of a „full court press” strategy ahead of pivotal congressional votes on military strikes in Syria.
The interviews will be taped on Monday afternoon and will air during each network’s Monday evening news broadcast, the White House said
