papers discuss Defense Minister Ehud Barak’s announced retirement from politics:

Yediot Aharonot says that while Barak’s „penetrating mind” may have served him well as „the ultimate Defense Minister,” it didn’t prevent him from having a somewhat erratic record in Israeli politics.

Haaretz discusses Ehud Barak’s legacy, and states that “The lesson to be learned from Barak’s term is how important it is to have a moderate defense minister who is aware of the limitations of force and is wary of military adventures or steps to further entrench the occupation in the territories.”

Yisrael Hayom discusses the aftermath of Operation Pillar of Defense. The author speculates: „If for example, tomorrow it is discovered that a truck laden with missiles is to be transported through the tunnels, which the Egyptians were either unaware of or did not want to stop, do we attack the truck and prevent the continued build-up, or once again do we sit and do nothing and prepare the contingency plan for the next operation?”

The Jerusalem Post comments on the exhumation of Yasser Arafat’s remains for re-examination, and notes that „This is another feature of the multifaceted war against Israel. The aim here is to accuse Israel of having assassinated Arafat in 2004 with radioactive poison.” The editor states that “The initial PA version of events was that Israeli agents clandestinely substituted toxins for medications Arafat was taking,” and asserts: “Not only is invaluable energy expended on deception at the expense of tackling actual problems, but fantastic convolutions of trumped up cloak and dagger stories don’t bolster the cause of genuine peace. Falsehoods negate peace.”
