SUMMARY OF OP-EDS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS
Two papers discuss the continuing hunger strike of Islamic Jihad terrorist
Khader Adnan, who is being held under an administrative detention order:
Yediot Ahronot says that, „Nothing good will come of this. Sooner or later,
even the various security services know that the use of administrative
detention orders is liable to hit the country like a boomerang.” The author
believes that Adnan has put Israeli decision-makers in a corner: „Try him
and thus expose sources of intelligence and put collaborators in danger, or
release him. The third possibility – allowing him to starve himself to
death – does not exist. And the great hope is that the decision-makers will
not allow themselves to go there without having a solution waiting in the
drawer.”
Yisrael Hayom asserts that, „Administrative detention is the Achilles heel
in Israel’s security-legal network.” However, the author believes that,
„Israel must make it clear to the world that three principles will guide it
in dealing with Adnan and his colleagues: It will minimize administrative
detentions as much as possible. It will reject any attempt to force it to
relinquish part of the war against terrorism merely because people like
Adnan, his father Musa and some journalists are interested in it while
seeking to undermine its security. It will prevent his death.” The paper
reminds its readers that, „Margaret Thatcher allowed terrorists from
Northern Ireland to starve themselves to death in British prisons. Israel
has no such iron lady. Therefore, as part of an emergency measure to save
lives, it must feed hunger-strikers intravenously.for their benefit and
Israel’s.”
__________
Ma’ariv discusses the peace process and contends that, „The Arabs will not
agree to sign any peace agreement that does not give them everything, which
is good for us because otherwise we would give them almost everything,
remain with nothing and be in danger of immediate destruction. On the other
hand, when they sign something, they have no qualms about violating it.”
The author claims that Egypt is in breach of its obligations under the peace
agreement with Israel because it is not stopping the flows of weapons into
Gaza and African migrants into the Negev, and allows its territory to be
used by terrorists, yet adds that, „We are silent because it would be
uncomfortable for us not to be, because we are frightened of being small and
isolated in the heart of the Arab world.”
