August 2011 has seen a significant increase in the number of attacks: 178 attacks as opposed to 53 in July (of which 134 were high trajectory shooting attacks, where rockets and mortar shells were launched).

Monthly summary – August

The main increase is in attacks emanating from the Gaza Strip: 135 attacks (compared to 20 in July). The cause of the surge in number of attacks is the escalation in southern Israel, following a combined terror attack on Israel-Egypt border, near Eilat (Aug. 18), killing 8 Israelis (6 civilians and 2 security personnel, one of friendly fire) and wounding 29.

A rise in the number of attacks was also noted in the Judea and Samaria area: 30 terror attacks (as opposed to 25 in July). On the other hand, Jerusalem has seen a slight drop in number of attacks: 6 attacks (as opposed to 8 in July).
There were two prominent attacks within the Green Line: the lethal combined attack near Eilat on Aug. 18 (small arms shooting, IEDs, AT and AA fire), and a running-over attack in Tel Aviv.

9 Israelis were killed in terror attacks this month and 55 were injured, most of them in the attack near Eilat and due to escalation in rocket fire; several casualties were caused in the running-over attack in Tel Aviv
