Yediot Ahronot believes that peace between Israel and the Palestinians will come when both sides become sufficiently disgusted with the status quo and the endless attrition. Nevertheless, the editors call on Israel to wage an unrelenting struggle against the terrorist organizations on the one hand and to evacuate the outposts and uphold the Palestinians’ human rights on the other.
Ma’ariv discusses Meretz’s decline from the 12 Knesset it won in the 1999 elections to the five it won in the 2006 elections. The editors note that Meretz’s call for two states on the basis of the 1967 lines has gained widespread acceptance, thus, „largely neutralizing – to a large degree – Meretz’s uniqueness, as well as its ability to be a fighting opposition.” However, the paper says that, „All attempts to implement this policy vis-à-vis the Palestinians – from the Oslo accords, through the Beilin-Abu Mazen understandings, Barak’s offers to Arafat at Camp David, US presidents’ mediators and their plans and ending in Sharon’s disengagement – have failed in fire and blood.” The editors add that, „These painful and bleeding failures have distanced – and are distancing – voters from Meretz.”
