SUMMARY OF EDITORIALS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS

______________________________ Yediot Ahronot, in its second editorial, contrasts the treatment and compensation meted out to Palestinians whose lands will be either damaged or impounded altogether due to the construction of the security fence, as well as the security forces’ attitude and approach to anti-fence demonstrators, with the treatment and compensation meted out to Jews from the Gaza Strip who will lose their lands due to the implementation of the Disengagement Plan and to the security forces’ attitude and approach to anti-disengagement demonstrators. The editors assert that, „The main difference is that in the first case, the damaged parties are Arabs and in the second – Jews. The second difference has to do with the facts that the number of Jewish opponents to the fence is small and that their influence on politicians and the media is scant.” The paper believes that, „The kid-glove policy is reserved only for the right.” Hatzofeh strongly criticizes Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s decision to hand over security responsibility for the Philadelphi corridor to Egypt. Yediot Ahronot notes that the Knesset has begun its summer recess and says that public opinion of MKs is very low despite the Knesset’s impressive legislative achievements. BPI-info
