Terror must be eliminated. If only somebody knew how.” The paper suggests that US President Bush can neither compel Hamas to halt its campaign of terror nor oblige Prime Minister Sharon to halt the eliminations. The editors remark: “Ceasefire? Between who exactly? The Palestinian Authority does not exist. What does exist in Palestine is poverty, unemployment, hatred and fanaticism. There is the man in the street consumed by hatred, who has nothing to lose but his life, which, in any case is worth zero.” The paper ventures that the eliminations, like the terror attacks, “just make the other side take an even harder line,” and are no longer useful, and also doubts the efficacy of both expulsions and home demolitions. The editors allege that the government has yet to hold an in-depth and strategic debate on what Israel’s foreign policy and security goals are. The paper concludes by suggesting that there currently exists a viable option for trying to end the bloodshed and calls for bold leadership that can move forward, “leadership that isn’t constantly looking back at its citizens, because they are perplexed and confused.” Hatzofeh accuses US President Bush of hypocrisy in criticizing Israel for taking the same actions in its war against Palestinian terror that the US has taken in its wars against Al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein. The editors aver that, “It is becoming increasingly clear that Abu Mazen is nothing more than Yasser Arafat’s scarecrow and that Hamas controls the Palestinian street more than the Palestinian Authority.” The paper suggests that, “Only the ‘American method’ of directed fire at anyone who raises his head, regardless of how the media reacts, might bring the Palestinians to realize that negotiations are preferable to terror.”
