Prime Minister Ariel Sharon met today (Sunday), 22.12.2002, with US Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) on one of the latter’s many visits to Israel. „I am sure that your visit to the Middle East will be an additional important contribution to our efforts to achieve quiet, developments in the diplomatic process and peace,” the Prime Minister said. Senator Lieberman expressed his personal support for Israel in its aspiration for peace in the Middle East and added that in his 14 years in the US Senate, he has never seen such strong support for Israel as there is today. The Senator said that in his view, this stems from the fact that the US sees Israel’s struggle against terror as part of a global struggle against terror. „The US hopes to not only stand alongside Israel in its war against terrorism but also in the attempt to create conditions that will lead to peace for the people of Israel and the Palestinians and all residents of the region. It is in this spirit of a unity of forces and a common desire for peace, which characterizes US-Israeli relations, that I hope to hold talks here in Israel,” Senator Lieberman said.
