Ultra-orthodox refuse to commit to Netanyahu

Following the rebuff, Netanyahu has initiated talks with Liberman, Lapid and Livni to try to restart the coalition.

Netanyau’s early election ploy ended today when MK Yaakov Liyzman, the leader of United Torah Judaism (UTJ) informed him that the ortodox are not willing to give him a guaranty that they will recommend he for the next government if early election are held. A similar announcement is expected from Shas leader MK Aryeh Deri.

This leaves Netanyahu with three choices; he can either carry on with his dysfunctional coalition, in which case he risks Lapid, Livni and possibly even Liberman forming the core of a new coalition that would include Labor, Kadima, and possibly the ultra-orthodox parties as well (without them such acoalition could not be formed). Since the Likud would not be included, Netanyahu will be relieved of duty as Prime Minister with either Lapid or Liberman replacing him or possibly a rotation agreement between them.

The second option is to risk early elections without any guarantee from the ultra-orthodox. His third option is to try and restart the current coalition, so it can continue until the end of its term. This seems to be Netanyahu’s preferred option, Hence his talks today with Lapid after a month of complete breakdown in communications between them.

„The Prime Minister is dealing with small politics” Minister of Finance LapidFlash 90

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Minster of Finance Yair Lapid will meet tomorrow (Monday) in an attempt to resolve the coalition crisis after one month of non-communication between them. Officials in Netanyahu’s office also added that Prime Minster will meet with other ministers, “in a last attempt to check out whether an agreement can be placed in order to continue the current government”. In addition sources close to , Netanyahu confirmed that he had confered with  Lieberman today, and that he expects to conduct meetings with Bennet, Lapid and Livni in the near future.

“The Prime Minister simply cannot accept the ongoing situation in which Ministers are frequently attacking the government like they were members of the opposition” say the officials. Moreover, they claim that Lapid is violating his commitment to transfer billions to the Ministry of Defense budget. Adding that “Netanyahu is expected to address Lapid and state once again that he will not tolerate Lapid’s behavior”.

This statement comes after yesterday Lapid himself proclaimed that he is “not afraid of early election, albeit this is not what Israel needs now-days”. Lapid slammed Netanyahu’s conducting as Prime Minister: “he is dealing with small politics, where survival and public opinion polls are Netanyahu’s utmost priority”.

In response to Lapid’s accusations, officials Likud attacked him, saying “Lapid has the audacity to slander the Prime Minister while he cannot run the Ministry of Finance; Lapid has failed to supply any proper solution for the housing problem and instead of supporting the IDF, he had stall the billions promised to the Ministry of Defense budget”. In addition, they added “he better start working and understand his responsibility”.
