The shofar has only just sounded, yet already WJC has had one of our most consequential meetings of the year. It was a defining moment for WJC and for world Jewry.

Last Monday, I was honored to have been invited to lead a small delegation of World Jewish Congress dignitaries to represent the global Jewish community before Pope Francis at the Vatican.

Pope Francis personally asked me to a pass on to you, and all Jews around the world, his warmest wishes for a sweet and peaceful new year in 5774. He also listened attentively to our concerns, including about the current ban on shechita (kosher slaughter) in Poland.

This was a milestone event for the World Jewish Congress. It illustrated our international breadth and impact — as well as confirmation of the respect and admiration we have earned.
