PRESIDENT SHIMON PERES TO MAKE STATE VISIT TO CANADA, 6-11.5.12
President Shimon Peres will, on Sunday, 6.5.12, leave for a state visit to Canada, in the framework of which he will visit Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal. During his visit, the President will hold a series of meetings with senior Canadian officials including Governor-General David Johnson, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the Leader of the Opposition and the premiers of Ontario and Quebec. The President will discuss with them a series of diplomatic issues, especially recent developments on the Iranian nuclear issue, changes in the Middle East and relations between Israel and its neighbors. Canada is among Israel closest friends and the President’s visit is designed to strengthen and enhance diplomatic and economic cooperation between them, as well as express gratitude to the Canadian leadership for its stance alongside Israel.
President Peres is expected to promote economic and scientific cooperation between Israel and Canada and attend the signing of a MOU in the field of science. During his visit, the President will also focus on strengthening ties with the Canadian Jewish community and will attend events in his honor to be held by the Jewish communities in Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal, chief among which will be an Independence Day reception. The President will also attend economic-scientific conferences on strengthening bilateral cooperation in brain research, nanotechnology, innovation and industries of the future. The Canadians will host the President at the official Rideau Hall guest residence.
