Summary of Editorials from the Hebrew Press

Yediot Aharonot argues that „Israel must not join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and must aggressively reject any ‘proposal’, friendly or otherwise, to do so.”  The author reminds his readers that „The issue is totally for the sovereign judgment of each and every country.  The treaty reflects a universally noble vision, but every state, on the strength of its basic and primary right to physically exist, and for security and self defense, has the right to examine the fairness of the principle in light of its own particular situation and must maintain means of defense appropriate to the nature and characteristic of the threat posed by its enemies.”
Ma’ariv opines that „The investigations and the arrests in the Holyland affair are the best Independence Day present that the rule of law could give to the citizens of Israel. The cleaning of the stables has begun.”
Yisrael Hayom discusses Remembrance Day for the Fallen of Israel’s Wars and refers to a poem by Natan Alterman: „Every person has his own precious offering.  From a list of more than 22,000 fallen, the common citizen has forged in his memory those who were dearest to him.”  The author notes that, „For most, the clichés are the truth.”
The Jerusalem Post mourns, together the loss of Lech Kaczynski, Poland’s deceased president – and great friend to Israel – who is being laid to rest today, and notes: „We will remember Kaczynski as an exceptional player on the world stage. He persevered against the odds in resisting the forces of duplicity which expediently and maddeningly persist to claim the moral high ground.”
Haaretz examines the high-level corruption underlying the Holyland affair, and finds that „People in positions of authority overlooked outrageous explanations and enabled a few people to fulfill every developer’s dream: to buy low and sell high.” The editor notes that „The key question is not only what the developers received, but whether there were others who, thanks to their words and signatures that permitted these developments, benefited in any way, and if so, what they got.”
