SUMMARY OF EDITORIALS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS
Yediot Ahronot says that Prime Minister Sharon, when he formed the unilateral disengagement, did not take into consideration the possibility that the security establishment would not accept such a step and that it would view, “the evacuation of Gaza as leverage for renewing talks with the Palestinian Authority.” The editors add that, “Many senior IDF officials see the difference between unilateral disengagement and disengagement through an agreement as the difference between defeat and victory.”
Furthermore, the security establishment believes that a peace agreement will strengthen Israel’s security while unilateral separation will achieve the exact opposite. The paper concludes that Sharon has two choices: “To disengage from Gaza or to disengage from his coalition.”
Hatzofeh congratulates the Israeli police on the capture of four foreign hit men and urges a greater crackdown on organized crime.
Yediot Ahronot, in its second editorial, discusses various considerations in appointing the next Governor of the Bank of Israel.
