AT LAST. 100-day sanctions end with handshake. ______________________________ SUMMARY OF EDITORIALS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS Yediot Ahronot discusses the conclusions of the IDF investigation into the recent shooting at Israeli demonstrators at the Maskha gate in the security fence and criticizes the military for “again being surprised.” The editors point out that while much effort was put into the security fence, it failed at the first test the rules of engagement. The paper laments that soldiers’ lives are again being put at risk vis-?-vis an issue on which there is no consensus in Israel and notes that this is likely to recur when settlements are evacuated. Hatzofeh comments on Justice Minister Joseph Lapid’s comment that the government should cancel plans to build the security fence since it will turn Israel into South Africa. The editors believe that while Israel will not recognize the Hague court’s right to pass judgment on the security fence, “It is very important for Israel to present its security needs which make the construction of the fence essential in order to assure the security and safety of Israel’s citizens.” The paper asserts that it is likely that the court will rule against Israel in any case and condemns Justice Minister Lapid’s comments for not, “serving the political and security interests of the State of Israel.” BPI.
