The rabbis will order opposition to evacuation. The leaders will call on left-wing soldiers not to guard and not to protect the settlers’ communities – and we, the Israeli people, where do we go? This is the embodiment of anarchy, the end of democracy.” Yediot Ahronot, in its second editorial, refers to a recent statistic that 30% of Israeli youth are not drafted into the IDF, and says that – haredim and those with legitimate handicaps aside – the number is far too high and attests to, “a decline in values in the State of Israel…and the intolerable ease with which the IDF and the Defense Ministry discharge almost anyone who wants to go home.” The editors recall when not having served in the IDF was considered shameful but note that, “Today, the ‘unfit’ have become ‘celebrities’, who are proud not to serve and say so in newspaper headlines.” The paper criticizes those parents who boast “how they saved their children from military service and laugh at the ‘suckers’ who wear uniforms,” and remarks, “The State of Israel has lost its shame.” Hatzofeh strongly criticizes the IDF’s plan to incorporate the IDF Rabbinate into the Personnel Branch.
