New Train Station Opens In Southern Israeli City Of Sderot
Sderot residents will now be able to enjoy a train ride from their city and back. Sderot’s new train station will connect the southern city to cities and towns in the center of the country. Traveling from Sderot to Tel Aviv will take 58 minutes. Residents in the area who are “rav kav” card carriers will enjoy free travel for 90 days.
There is much excitement today in Sderot. After years of planning and construction, a new train station is opening today in the southern city that will connect it to cities and towns in central Israel as well as other destinations in the south.
The new train station was inaugurated at a ceremony today in which Transport Minister Israel Katz participated in. After opening the station for public transporation at 16:00 (4 PM) the first train to leave is expected to reach Tel Aviv in 58 minutes. A ride on the train to Ashkelon is expected to take only 12 minutes.
In light of the arrival of the train to the city, Rakevet Yisrael (Israel Railways) will allow free train transporation for 90 days, for all residents of Sderot and the surrounding areas who hold “rav kav” transportation cards. Surrounding areas where this benefit will apply include Netivot, Ofkim, residents of the Regional Councils of Sadot Negev, Sha’ar Hanegev, Merchavim, Eshkol, B’nei Shimon as well as students from Sapir College.
The inauguration of railway station in the city has been received with excitement by many, but some are experiencing mixed feelings. On the one hand, residents are excited about the new options available to them for reaching the center of the country for occupational and social reasons. On the other hand, the arrival of the train to the city raises concerns that college students and others who now live in Sderot, will take advantage of the new train station and live outside the station.
