70th Anniversary of the Rescue of the Danish Jews
Venue: Holocaust Memorial Center, Budapest, Páva Street 39
In 1943, in German-occupied Denmark, the Danish people realized that all 7,500 Danish Jews were about to be rounded up and deported to German concentration camps. Danish citizens spontaneously made their own decision to prevent the deportation. Risking their own lives, the Danes quickly rallied round to save their fellow citizens, and almost all of the country’s Jews were able to escape the clutches of the Nazis and find refuge in neutral Sweden. This remarkable episode that took place 70 years ago will be commemorated at an event organized by the Danish Embassy in Budapest and the Holocaust Memorial Center. A lecture will be delivered by Dr. Therkel Stræde, Professor of Contemporary History, University of Southern Denmark. Speakers include H.E. Mr. Tom Nørring, Ambassador of Denmark, H.E. Ms. Karin Olofsdotter, Ambassador of Sweden and Prof. Dr. Szita Szabolcs DSc., acting director of the Holocaust Memorial Center. Simultaneous English-Hungarian translation will be provided. Registration to the event at the sansev@um.dk e-mail address. During the night of 9-10 November 1938, hundreds of synagogues were burned, Jewish owned shops were demolished and looted in Germany. At the 75th anniversary of the tragical events, the director of the Holocaust Memorial Center, Prof. Dr. Szabolcs Szita will talk about the episode. Entry is free; language Hungarian.

Wallenberg’s Rescue Action on 28 November 1944
Forced labor serviceman Walter Heller, and many of his comrades were rescued from deportation at the Józsefváros railway station by Raoul Wallenberg on 28 November, 1944. The Swedish diplomat and Tamás Veres photographer escorted those forced labor servicemen, who possessed Swedish “protection letters” to the Szent István Park, and kept them there until they were safe to disperse. Based on the photos taken by Tamás Veres during the day, with lot of research efforts it was possible to identify Walter Heller, as participant to the events.
