Polio in Israel: The detection over the last few months of the polio virus in Israeli wastewater – including at a Jerusalem wastewater treatment plant last week — has prompted a massive polio innoculation effort in the Jewish state. In 1957, a polio innoculation drive was credited with reducing the number of polio cases to eight from 125 the previous year. But the real heroes were the monkeys – several hundred of which were imported to Israel from India the year before.
Birth and death of the Foundation for Jewish Culture: The Foundation for Jewish Culture, which announced last week that it was shutting down, was launched on May 22, 1960 to “bring enrichment to the field of Jewish culture” and “help achieve the most effective service on the part of the existing Jewish cultural agencies.” The first awards for Jewish scholarship and cultural achievements came that October in the form of four $500 prizes in the fields of Hebrew and Yiddish letters.
