Former Chief of Israel Defense Intelligence, Major General (Res.) Amos Yadlin, was Appointed as Head of the Institute for National Security Studies

 

Former Chief of Israel Defense Intelligence, Maj. Gen. (res.) Amos Yadlin, was appointed by the Board of Directors as Head of the Institute for National Security Studies, and will assume the position as of the upcoming November. Yadlin began his military service as a fighter pilot and took part in the Yom Kippur War and in many operations, including the attack on Iraq’s nuclear reactor in 1981. He later held senior positions at the Air Force, including: Commander of the Hatzerim Air Base, Head of the Intelligence Division and Chief of Air Staff. Yadlin served as Major General in three positions: Commandant of the IDF Colleges, IDF Attaché in Washington, and for the past 5 years – since 2006 – Chief of Israel Defense Intelligence. Yadlin holds a BA in Economics and Business Administration, and a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University. In the past 6 months, Yadlin is a Research Fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy in the United States. Yadlin will replace Dr. Oded Eran, who has concluded his term, and will continue to operate at the Institute as a Senior Research Fellow.

 

Institute Chairman, Frank Lowy, announced that the Board of Directors unanimously decided on electing Maj. Gen. (res.) Yadlin, and welcomed his appointment: „Yadlin is one of the most prominent commanders who emerged from the ranks of the IDF. He is a commander who combined a rich military experience and command skills with extraordinary intellectual abilities. During his military service,” Lowy said, „Amos Yadlin presented leadership and strategic analysis capability. I have no doubt that Yadlin will continue to establish the Institute’s role as a leading think tank in issues of strategy and national security”. Lowy referred to the recent shocks and changes in the Middle East and the world, adding that „especially now we see the importance of the Institute, bringing together the best strategic minds inIsrael, to think outside conventional frameworks and come up with solutions and creative ideas to the State of Israel’s challenges of national security for decision makers”. Mr. Lowy thanked Dr. Oded Eran for the time he headed the Institute and for the achievements obtained during his tenure.

 

The Institute for National Security Studies was founded in October 2006 as an external institute of theTelAvivUniversity, engaged inIsrael’s national security, theMiddle Eastand the international arena. Furthermore, the Institute operates to contribute to public discourse and governmental work in issues that are high onIsrael’s security agenda through seminars, conferences and various publications including position papers, research and periodical magazines.

 

In 2008, the Institute was rated among the Top Ten Institutes of Public Policy in the World by the Foreign Policy Institute, an American research institute. The Institute for National Security Studies is overseen by a Board headed by Mr. Frank Lowy. Prof. Itamar Rabinovich, former President of theTelAvivUniversityandIsrael’s Ambassador to theUnited States, serves as his deputy.
