SUMMARY OF OP-EDS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS
Yediot Ahronot says that there is no reason to withhold from the public the warnings about a possible intended terrorist attack in the south and ventures that, „Going public is likely to prod the Egyptians into more urgent action.”
Ma’ariv believes that, „It is too early to rejoice over the fall of the regime in Libya – after Tunisia and Egypt – because there is no liberation without the liberation of women,” and adds that, „Whoever oppresses half of the population, on claims of culture and heritage, cannot talk about freedom and democracy; they do not go together.” The author also asserts that, „There is another test: Relations with Israel. Sayyid Qutb, among the most important founders of the Muslim Brotherhood, sharply opposed the emancipation of women and was an anti-Semite. This is line is characteristic of many radical Muslims. Hatred of Israel has characterized not only the Islamists but also most of the intellectuals, who have never really fought for the status of women.”
Yisrael Hayom comments on events in Syria in Egypt. The author avers that, „Despite all the desire to get rid of the Assad dictatorship, this is a religious and tribal affair, not a struggle for Western democracy.” The paper says that, „The chance that the current interim regime in Egypt, or that which follows after the elections, will be able to successfully deal with its fundamental problems is close to nil,” and believes that, „The Israeli Government is acting with responsible prudence,” vis-à-vis Egypt and recent events near Eilat. However, the author cautions that, „It is clear that there is almost no chance that relations between us and Cairo will return to what they were in the foreseeable future, if ever.”
