On Sunday, April 26, Israeli flags were set at half mast during a ceremony at Mt. Herzl, honoring the 22,570 fallen Israeli soldiers. Among the ceremony’s attendees were the Chief of the General Staff, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, Head of the Human Resources Branch, Gen. Avi Zamir, the Chief Military Rabbi, Brig. Gen. Avihai Ronzki, Police Commissioner, Dudi Cohen, several IDF officers, and bereaved families.

The first flag was set at half mast by Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, in blessed memory of Captain Jonathan Nethaneal, near his grave.  Captain Nethaneal is a fallen soldier that was killed during Operation Cast Lead.  At the end of the ceremony, the officers placed pennants on each of the graves at Mt. Herzl.

Throughout the day, soldiers that maintain contact with bereaved families, the security offices, and the youth movements in Israel visited the graves of each one of the 22,570 fallen Israeli soldiers that have fallen since well before Israel’s independence. Each flag that was placed was placed at half mast with a black ribbon at the top, in memory of each fallen soldier.
