Today’s issues: A new UN, no justice for Palestinians, it’s time to look the gift horse in the mouth, and BDS encounters a fight in Europe.

The Jerusalem Post believes that the appointment of a new UN secretary-general and next month’s General Assembly meeting present an opportunity for a reevaluation of the UN’s treatment of Israel, and states: “The next secretary-general should take steps to integrate Israel into the UN’s institutions; end the prejudiced approach of the Human Rights Council toward Israel’s purported human rights abuses; and take further steps to normalize relations between the UN and Israel. If he or she is successful, the UN of the 21st century will more closely resemble the UN that brought the State of Israel into existence nearly 70 years ago.”

Haaretz attacks the arbitrary extension of jail sentences imposed by Israeli courts on Palestinia ns prisoners, and asserts: “even the faintest semblance of justice for Palestinian defendants in security cases is being totally undermined. Anyone who believes that Israel is a state of laws must speak out against these arbitrary arrests.”

Yediot Aharonot comments on the discovery that anti-Israel billionaire George Soros was behind a plot to influence Israeli NGOs, and asserts: “A country cannot stay indifferent to a campaign that works toward its undoing. Israel’s Basic Law: the Knesset, which limits the extent of any body denying Israel’s right to exist to act as an elected representative, must also be implemented in regard to NGO funding.”

Israel Hayom is encouraged by the decision of students at Leipzig University in Germany to reject BDS as an ‘anti-Semitic movement,’ and believes it portends that Europeans are becoming tired of the Palestinians’ demagogic discourse that demonizes Israel. The author argues that “There are more and more signs that the Europeans are growing tired of the demagogic discourse that slings mud at Israel,” and states: “It’s time for Israel to get in the game and rewrite the conversation.”
