Ilan Mor, The Ambassador of Israel in Hungary welcomes Indictment of Hungarian Nazi War Criminal Laszlo Csatary for World War II Crimes
Budapest – According to Ilan Mor, the Ambassador of The State of Israel to Hungary, the decision today (18.6) by the Budapest Investigative Prosecutors to indict the former Kosice senior police officer and ghetto commandant Laszlo Csatary, demonstrates that even after 70 years, Justice can be attained and their dignity can be restored.
But, the indictment of Csatary is not only about the war criminal Csatary.
It is first and foremost about the memory of the victims, about the closure it brings to the survivors and the awareness it raises about crimes long forgotten in Hungary and elsewhere in Europe. It is also about doing the right thing even after so many years.
This decision of today also sends a significant and important educational message to the younger generation in Hungary, as the country struggles with its history during World War II.
The Ambassador of the State of Israel welcomes the decision and expresses his hope that the Hungarian authorities will do their utmost in order to expedite the trial in view of the defendant’s advanced age.
Ilan Mor.
