  • Israeli charged with feeding information to Hezbollah

A 45-year-old resident of Shfaram, a predominantly Arab-populated city in northern Israel, has been indicted on a series of security-related charges including contact with a foreign agent, handover of potentially valuable information to the enemy and aiding an unlawful association, Yediot Aharonot reports.

According to the indictment, Zaher Omar Yusefin traveled to Saudi Arabia for the Haj when he allegedly met members of Hezbollah and Palestinian groups, helped them hold meetings with Israeli youth who also arrived at the country and gave information on army bases in northern Israel.

  • Egypt deploys forces in Sinai border area

Israeli military sources have confirmed that the Egyptian military has deployed “additional ground forces” of an unspecified quantity to the northern Sinai Peninsula in an attempt to rein in Islamist extremists, the Times of Israel reports.

While the area was demilitarised as part of the Israel-Egypt peace treaty, the latest troop reinforcements have been undertaken with Israeli consent.

  • Netanyahu will not run for party post

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is likely to drop his candidacy for the presidency of the Likud central committee, the Jerusalem Post reports.

The four announced candidates for the position of president were Netanyahu, Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon, former minister Michael Eitan, and Gidon Ariel, a Ma’aleh Adumim branch Likud central committee member. Netanyahu’s associates said he would leave the race and endorse Danon in return for Danon advancing the prime minister’s interests in the party, such as electing a retired judge to head the party’s internal court rather than a hawkish party activist.
