SUMMARY OF OP-EDS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS
Two papers discuss various issues ahead of the January 22 elections for the
19th Knesset:
Yediot Ahronot comments on Likud Minister Moshe Kahlon’s decision to take a
break from politics. The author asserts that, „Moshe Kahlon was politically
executed by all those who saw him as an obstacle to their upward path. He
has all the right qualities for success: He’s young, smiles all the time, is
balanced and liberal, came to politics from as low a place as possible, is
Sephardic and was a success at his Government ministry.” The paper adds,
„Kahlon’s very success was also his undoing. It is not the media and the
public that vote for him, it is the [Likud] central committee – and there
all the other candidates waited in ambush,” and suggests that Kahlon decided
to bow out first. The author muses, „Once, or so it is said, politicians
thought – first and foremost – about the good of the country and their
personal contributions to it. Today, they think mainly about themselves.”
Ma’ariv refers to possible political comebacks by Ehud Olmert and Aryeh
Deri. The author avers, „I think that someone who was convicted of breach of
trust and someone whose acquittal is being appealed to the Supreme Court are
unfit to stand before the public at the ballot box.”
