Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Avigdor Liberman met today (January 24, 2011) in London with British Foreign Secretary William Hague. The private meeting lasted for about one hour. After the meeting, Secretary Hague escorted FM Liberman through the war rooms from where Winston Churchill conducted World War II.
FM Liberman and Secretary Hague agreed to hold a bilateral strategic dialogue in Jerusalem on 17 March 2011. The two ministers discussed the strengthening of bilateral relations, with emphasis on the financial and technological spheres. The two also discussed the Iranian attempts to achieve nuclear capabilities, and stressed the determination of both sides to end the Iranian nuclear program, which threatens the stability of the entire Middle East.
FM Liberman stated that “Every leader today must ask himself how Churchill would have dealt with the Iranian problem, and to take with this role model in mind.”
FM Liberman also met in London with leaders of the Jewish community and friends of Israel in the British parliament. FM Liberman stressed that “The main problem of the Middle East is not the settlements, but rather extremism of radical Islamic elements who threaten the stability of the region. Recent events in Tunisia, Algeria, Lebanon and Iraq are not connected to the negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. The real threat on the leadership of the Palestinian Authority is not Israel, but Hamas and Jihad.”
