SUMMARY OF EDITORIALS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS

Yediot Ahronot calls on the Government to undertake further confidence-building measures vis-à-vis the Palestinians in Judea and Samaria and to be more receptive to the possibility of diplomatic progress. The editors believe that, „Domestic considerations, which stem from the fear of paying a political price, must not lead our strategy,” and argue that, „History teaches that leaders who acted boldly and carried out significant steps have received the confidence of the public, that knows how to appreciate this.”
Ma’ariv laments that seven months before municipal elections, Israel’s major political parties have yet to present candidates for the Jerusalem mayoralty. The editors claim that, „Jerusalem, in its forlorn state, should stand at the top of the major parties’ agendas.”
Makor Rishon-Hatzofeh asserts that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is bound by the Golan Heights Law. The editors declare that, „The nation has decided that the Heights are an inseparable part of the State of Israel,” and add that, „Withdrawing from the Heights would be like withdrawing from the rest of the country, and it is important that the Prime Minister internalize this.”
