(Communicated by the Cabinet Secretariat) At the weekly Cabinet meeting today (Sunday), 30.3.2003: 1. Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz and the OC Intelligence Maj.-Gen. Aharon Ze’evi (Farkash) briefed ministers on security matters, including the war against Iraq. OC Intelligence Maj.-Gen. Ze’evi discussed the allies’ strategic targets and the situation on the ground.


Defense Minister Mofaz said that the war in Iraq is progressing towards a decisive conclusion. In spite of coalition forces’ efforts in western Iraq – the security establishment reiterates its assessment that the Israeli population and the security forces must continue their basic preparedness. It is important that recommendations to maintain a sealed room and to carry gas masks are underscored and upheld, while continuing with daily life. Defense Minister Mofaz commented that the terror threat continues to exist and added that there have been many warnings of attacks. The Defense Minister gave details of attacks that have recently been thwarted. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon referred to Abu Mazen’s appointment as Palestinian Prime Minister and the latter’s efforts to form a government.
