Holocaust Remembrance Day Honored
at the Quirinale Palace

The official ceremony for the Holocaust Remembrance Day was held at the Quirinale Palace, residence of the President of the Italian Republic, last week.
“The Republic of Italy is not afraid of facing the history of the country because it is strong and founded and rooted in democracy,” said President Sergio Mattarella, who expressed his surprise and indignation at the idea, supported by some, that the fascist regime had merits, except for “some mistakes” such as the Racist Legislation and the war. “Racism and war were not limited and casual episodes in the fascist way of thinking, but their direct and unavoidable consequence”.
During the ceremony, Holocaust survivors Piero Terracina and Liliana Segre, who was appointment by Mattarella as a Senator for life a few days ago, shared the memories of their tragic experience, while Jewish Italian historian Anna Foa delivered a speech highlighting how the events of those darkest years started not with the deportation of the Jews to death camps in 1943, but with the Racist Legislation of 1938 “with the complete indifference of intellectuals, scientists, citizens, and with the controversial responsibility of the Church”.

Running for Memory in Bologna

About a thousand people took part in the second edition of the “Run for MEM” last week in Bologna. The non-competitive sports event was created by the Union of the Italian Jewish Communities (UCEI) to promote awareness and knowledge about the Holocaust.
Attending the event was the popular Italian singer Gianni Morandi, together with the former runners Franca Fiacconi and Shaul Ladany, who both survived the Holocaust and the terrorist attack on the Israeli team attending the Olympics Games in Munich in 1972.
As it happened last year in Rome, also this year the route of the run featured a number of streets and buildings that were central in the history of the city during the advance of the second world war.

“Luchemos contra las discriminaciones”

En el Palazzo Chigi, Maria Elena Boschi, la Vicesecretaria de la Presidencia del Consejo responsable para la igualdad de oportunidades, validó un protocolo de acuerdo con Noemi Di Segni, la presidenta de la Unión de las Comunidades Judías Italianas (UCEI). Se trata de un convenio a través del que las dos partes se comprometen a elaborar un programa conjunto de actividades, de un año de duración, prorrogable por otros dos años, “con el fin de promover y garantizar el principio de igualdad de trato entre personas de religiones distintas y de contribuir, además, a eliminar todo tipo de discriminación por razones de origen étnico o religión. Dicho objetivo considera los ámbitos de acción establecidos por el Decreto Ley no 215 de 2003, de responsabilidad del Servicio Nacional contra las Discriminaciones Raciales (UNAR)”.
El programa se centrará en promover la adopción, tanto por entidades públicas como privadas, de medidas específicas, que incluyen las de acción positiva, para difundir informaciones relativas al contraste y a la discriminación por razones raciales, de etnia y de religión. El proyecto hará hincapié, además, en la máxima divulgación posible de los recursos disponibles en el ordenamiento en cuestión, tanto mediante acciones de sensibilización de la opinión pública en torno a la igualdad de trato, como a través de la realización de campañas de información y comunicación. Asimismo, la iniciativa promoverá cursos de formación, intercambios de experiencias y de estudios y análisis que detecten la presencia de los fenómenos discriminatorios y eviten su eventual extensión o desarrollo. Entre las finalidades principales, se halla la elaboración de directrices y códigos de conducta para solucionar cualquier discriminación por razones de etnia y religión, así como el diseño y la efectuación de intervenciones experimentales que se evaluarán de acuerdo con las diferencias étnicas y religiosas que deberán respetarse y tutelarse.

Es wird viel Wind um Fake-News gemacht, um deren Gefahr und das Risiko, das entsteht, wenn man von fehlerhaften Nachrichten überflutet wird, ohne das Wahre vom Falschen unterscheiden zu können. Alles vollkommen richtig. Ich will daran erinnern, dass bereits ein ähnliches Beispiel in der Geschichte existiert hat, das schreckliche Folgen für die Juden und die ganze Welt hatte: die Protokolle der Weisen von Zion. Wenn es dieses Buch in einer ganz anderen Zeit, ohne Internet und Facebook, ohne die schnelle Informationsverbreitung im Netz, geschafft hat, solch schreckliche Dinge zu bewirken, dann läuft es mir beim Gedanken daran, was in der Zeit des Internets passieren könnte, kalt den Rücken runter. Nun sollte man vielleicht auf die bereits erwähnte Fähigkeit, das Wahre vom Falschen unterscheiden zu können, hindeuten. Aber wie?

A law has recently been passed by the Polish Parliament’s Lower House criminalizing any mention of Polish crimes or complicity during the Shoah. As a consequence, all of a sudden, concentration and death camps will lose their context. Things just happened, no Polish people were ever involved. Jews, maybe, built the camps themselves and did everything on their own. Impossible to even speak about them.
But as I am a very practical person, I sincerely wonder how one can conceive of such a reality.
If Polish death camps are no more to be considered Polish, and no Poles knew about them, or saw them, or did anything to make them possible, where are Nazi camps on Polish land to be located? Would this formulation be allowed then? Maybe, as there are stateless people owning no passport, there will also be weird cases of stateless concentration and death camps

Holocaust hero honored 75 years after dramatic rescue of fellow Jews from Nazis

Seventy-five years after he helped a group of over 1,000 Jews fleeing Italian-occupied France, 98-year-old Jewish-Italian Enzo Cavaglion was honored in his hometown of Cuneo on Sunday.
Cavaglion was presented with the Jewish Rescuers Citation by B’nai Brith World Center-Jerusalem and the Committee to Recognize the Heroism of Jews who Rescued Fellow Jews During the Holocaust at his residence, surrounded by family and friends.
He still lives in the same village from which he helped organize the 1943 rescue effort.
“Enzo was really moved by the award,” said Alan Schneider, director of B’nai Brith World Center-Jerusalem, who attended the presentation.
“He’s 98 years old — frail in body, but his mind is sharp, and it was an opportunity for him to remember those awful days when he assisted these 1,000 Jews who escaped over the Maritime Alps from France into Italy,” Schneider said.
The Jewish Rescuers Citation was established in 2011 to help correct the common misconception that Jews didn’t significantly help rescue other Jews during the Holocaust.
To date, nearly 200 heroes who operated in Germany, France, Hungary, Greece, Slovakia, Yugoslavia, Russia, Lithuania, Poland, Holland, Italy, Ukraine, Latvia and Austria have been awarded the citation.
