SEASON CLOSING OPERA GALA WITH THOMAS HAMPSON 28 June 2010

 

 


 

Thomas Hampson, the most sought-after baritone of the world, also appears as a guest singer in Budapest at the Season Closing Opera Gala. Besides Hampson, the opera star gala features winners of the 2009 Domingo Singing Competition: Angel Blue, Aleksey Kudrya and Julia Novikova, together with some of our world-famous Hungarian stars: Ildikó Komlósi, Gyöngyi Lukács, Erika Miklósa and László Polgár. The programme includes pieces by Bernstein, Bizet, Tchaikovsky, Delibes, Lehár, Massenet, Rossini, J. Strauss and Verdi. Tickets are already available at the box office of the Opera House.

American baritone Thomas Hampson, a frequent guest singer in all of the world’s most important concert halls and opera houses, works with the most renowned singers, conductors and orchestras. His repertoire is exceptionally wide, and apart from his operatic roles he is well-known as one of the best interpreters of lieder – mainly the works of Schuman, Mahler and Wolf.

In the 2009/2010 season he appeared in Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah under the baton of Kurt Masur in Leipzig; in Verdi’s Ernani and Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin at the Zurich Opera; and in La traviata at the New York Metropolitan Opera.

Last season’s highlights included his role debut as Scarpia in Tosca at the Zurich Opera, and his notable portrayals of Athanaël in Thaďs at the Metropolitan Opera and Germont in La traviata at Covent Garden – the latter two opposite Renée Fleming. He also took part in the gala opening night of the Metropolitan Opera, broadcast live in HD worldwide

A holder of numerous awards and prizes, Thomas Hampson’s discography of more than 150 albums includes winners of a Grammy Award, two Edison Prizes and the Grand Prix du Disque.
