Summary of Editorials from the Hebrew Press
Yediot Aharonot relates to the situation of non-reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas and de facto separation between the West Bank and Gaza. „Take note of the new reality, which is materializing on the ground. Vociferous declarations of unilateral establishment of a Palestinian state have disappeared. In a crawling process, they are working in Gaza and are working in parallel in the West Bank, on two separate states for the same people. Abu Mazen is no longer resigning, Salaam Fayyad manages according to economic initiatives and the Palestinian Authority’s security apparatus, they tell us, is working as it is supposed to, in earnest.”
Ma’ariv says that „The damage from the criticism against the arrest warrant against Tzipi Livni is both extensive and unnecessary. It is possible to resolve it easily and by ourselves. An objective, independent and fair investigation by internal Israeli bodies is likely to effectively block the application of universal authority upon IDF officers and other senior state figures.”
Yisrael Hayom calls on Israel’s leadership to „Fly to London and embarrass the British.” The author suggests that „the heads of state prove that they are not afraid, travel to London, and protest in actions, not in words, against the legitimacy of arrest warrants.”
The Jerusalem Post urges Mahmoud Abbas to stop ducking his responsibility to both his own people and to Israelis, especially in light of past and present Israeli steps towards reconciliation, and calls on him to meet with the Israeli leadership in an attempt to reach an agreement on the Palestinian issue. The editor feels that „Abbas seems to not appreciate the opportunity”, and states that „Responsible world leaders should now focus on persuading Abbas to reach out to the people of Israel by accepting Israel as a Jewish state (not to be flooded, that is, with millions of Palestinians) that a Palestinian state would not try to destroy.” The editor notes that „Such steps would indicate that the Palestinian leader intends to take advantage of his final months in power to work seriously toward a viable accommodation.”
Haaretz refers to PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’ proposal to freeze Jewish construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem for six months without making a public declaration to that effect, making it possible, in his view, to begin talks on a final peace agreement without preconditions other than the road map’s provisions. This, according to Abbas, would allow the sides to reach an agreement. The editor adds that if Israel’s leaders „truly wish to preserve the two-state option and avoid the collapse of the Palestinian leadership that supports it, they must respond positively to Abbas’ proposal.”
