PA convening emergency meeting in Ramallah after TA bombing

Senior Palestinian Authority officials convened an emergency meeting in Ramallah late Friday night, following a suicide bombing in Tel Aviv that killed 8 people. Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat condemned Friday night’s suicide bombing outside a Tel Aviv club „in the strongest possible terms.” At least 8 people were killed in the blast and some 54 others were wounded when a bomber blew himself up outside the „Stage” club, on the city’s promenade. „Whoever is behind it is seriously attempting to sabotage all efforts being exerted to revive the peace process and should not be allowed to succeed,” Erekat said. A United States official who declined to be identified said the bombing „underscores the need for decisive against those who continue to believe that violence is the way to deal with problems. „I would expect that the Palestinian leadership is as concerned about this as we are.” Speaking at Ichilov Hospital, Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai said, „Those who believe we have reached peace are wrong. We are still in a process and there are a lot of people who are want to harm it. We will have to wait some more for security and peace.” „The Palestinian Authority’s attempt to reach arrangements for the prevention of terror have failed, just as Israel said they would. Israel has always maintained that is impossible to maintain a dialogue with [militants],” David Baker, an official in the Prime Minister’s office, said. A cook at the nightclub, David Pardes, said that the scene of the blast was littered with bodies. „I said… it’s a terrorist attack. There were lots of dead, lots of bodies, cars totally destroyed,” he told Channel 2. „There was a suicide bomber at the entrance, and lots of people. It’s very similar to what happened at Pasha,” he said, referring to the June 2001 suicide bombing at the nearby Dolphinarium, in which 21 people – mostly teenagers – were killed. BPI-info+IBA
