| The High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union, Catherine Ashton to President Peres:
„We support the process that will get us into talks in order to find a solution that will be lasting peace and will enable the people of this country to live in that peace.”
Ashton also expressed thoughts on the captured soldier Gilad Shalit:
” I know that today is the birthday of Gilad Shalit. And as he is 25 today I hope that long before his next birthday we will see him released and my thoughts are with his parents tonight.”
President Shimon Peres held a working meeting with High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union, Mrs. Catherine Ashton. The two discussed issues relating to the advancement of the peace process in the region, the recent changes in the Middle East, and the strengthening of relations between Israel and the European Union.
At the start of the meeting President Peres said: ” Welcome. Your visit is timely. Your visit is of the utmost importance and I think we don’t have much time, we have to make a supreme effort to not turn an opportunity into a mistake. It is with this sentiment that I would like to welcome you.”
Representative Ashton mentioned the recent events in the south and Gilad Shalit’s birthday: ” Mr. President we join you knowing that this has been a difficult week for this country, there have been attacks and I know that today is the birthday of Gilad Shalit. And as he is 25 today I hope that long before his next birthday we will see him released and my thoughts are with his parents tonight.” |
